Centenary of the discovery of the paintings - PECH MERLE CAVES

1922 – 2022: 100 years ago the Pech Merle drawings were discovered…
The prehistoric galleries were discovered on September 4, 1922, by three children from the village of Cabrerets: André David, his younger sister Marthe, and Henry Dutertre. By candlelight, armed with ropes and hammers, they entered a 140-meter-long passageway and emerged after several hours of exploration in the painting room. It was past midnight when the children emerged from the cave. They were exhausted but overwhelmed by the joy of their discoveries. They had spent 12 hours in the cavity.
A century later, join us in celebrating this discovery and the history of this important prehistoric site in Europe. Throughout 2022, numerous events will celebrate the centenary.
Discover Pech Merle like you've never seen it before!
