The GR 651

WAY OF ST JAMES OF COMPOSTELA

Here is what Dominique Fourgeaud says on his site about this variant of the Way of Saint James (coming from Puy-en-Velay):

"After the town of Figeac, two routes are available to the medieval pilgrim to reach the beautiful city of Cahors.

One follows a pretty river, a tributary of the Lot, the Célé. The other, further south, follows the deserted causse of Quercy.

The now marked path (GR 65) takes us along this second route, but my preference as a hiker clearly leans towards the first: the very pretty Célé valley, also marked by the markers of another long-distance hiking trail, the GR 651, and therefore easy to follow. If you take the small road in the valley, along the river, you can enjoy some remarkable sites at your leisure: Corn, a 15th century castle; Espagnac, a remarkable medieval monastery village; Marcilhac, a typical village and very beautiful abbey; Sauliac-sur-Célé, fortified medieval houses...

But the most beautiful surprises are the path that holds them for us. In places, it winds its way along the edge of the cliff, sometimes even halfway up the wall, allowing us to appreciate the beauty of the sites from above. These magnificent viewpoints, accessible to no other, are the privilege of the hiker. The passage above Sauliac is the most remarkable moment of this route.
